Nigerians react Over CBN Governor’s Comment On Cryptocurrencies

“Dear CBN governor,

You are stiffening & killing innovative Blockchain startups in Nigeria. You are blocking Nigeria from the privileges the decentralized economy is offering the world.

The USA has Coinbase, Binance is owned by a Chinese, the two largest exchanges in the world.”

The above statement was made in response to CBN Governor’s press briefing on Wednesday regarding the apex bank’s decision to freeze accounts linked to Cryptocurrencies. Godwin Emefiele noted that Cryptocurrency is created out of “thin air”.

That statement irked disappointing responses from Nigerians.

“From BARTER, to GOLD, to PAPER BILL, to GOLD STANDARD, BRETTON WOODS & to END OF GOLD STANDARD. That’s the history of money. The paper money isn’t up to 60yrs old while Cryptocurrency is next

But the CBN Governor, Emefiele talks like he never knew that money changes with time, an online commentator simply known as IZU posted on Twitter.”

Another Nigerian named Sammy Sammy also stated, “Former CEO of Zenith Bank and current CBN Governor, Godwin Emefiele needs to read from a handout to explain cryptocurrency for Nigerians? No wonder the economic policies are based on trial & error with a touch of Insha’Allah.”

Many Nigerians are of the opinion that the Central Bank could have adopted a strategy that other countries are adopting as Cryptocurrency is the future of money.
