An eleven-year-old boy in Kenya is nursing serious injuries after a hippo attacked him.

The Grade three pupil was injured on the thighs and abdomen during the incident in Suba South, Homa Bay County, southwestern Kenya.

Peter Otieno was attacked by the animal when he and his colleagues went to fetch water from Lake Victoria.

Otieno is said to have been grabbed by the hippo at the thigh before his colleagues raised the alarm. Fishermen working nearby responded to the call and rescued him.

He was immediately rushed to a local hospital. However, he is still in bad condition since he cannot talk or eat.

Parents have been warned against sending their children to the lake to fetch water, especially now when the water level is high due to the ongoing rains in the country.

Hippo attack is common along Lake Victoria beaches. Last year December, two children died after they were attacked by a hippopotamus at a beach in Bondo, 50 kilometres west of lake city Kisumu.
