A Kenyan court has sentenced a man to 35-years imprisonment for killing a journalist.

The court found James Ogola Luta guilty of Murdering the late Eric Oloo, who worked for the Star Newspaper.

Eric was found dead in November 2019 in the house of a senior police officer’s house in Ugunja, Siaya County in western Kenya.

Police found the body of the deceased lying in a pool of blood with three deep cuts in the head in Sabina Kerubo’s houses. He was reported cohabiting with the woman when the incident transpired.

The investigations narrowed down to Ms Kerubo, James Ogola Luta, and his brother Luta. However, Ms Kerubo and Fraklin Luta were exonerated from being involved in the murder of the news reporter.

Kerubo, who turned into a state witness, was later found dead in her house in Machakos County, southeast of Nairobi, where she had been transferred following the incident.

While issuing her ruling, Lady Justice Aburili said the prosecution had proved its case against the accused during mitigation when he pleaded for leniency and asked the deceased’s family forgiveness, saying he is the breadwinner of his young family.

The court also found that the accused has records of past offenses.

The scribe’s family welcomed the ruling.

Luta has 14 days to appeal the ruling.
