The Edo State Police Command has confirmed the death of Abu Tahir Babatunde, who was kidnapped along with his elder brother, Dr Abu Ibrahim Babatunde, in Auchi, Etsako West Local Government Area.
The confirmation follows the circulation of a video on social media showing a corpse abandoned by a riverside, alleged to be that of Abu Tahir Babatunde.
The two siblings, Abu Tahir, who was a fresh medical graduate of Ambrose Alli University, and Abu Ibrahim Babatunde, who is currently undergoing housemanship at Edo University Teaching Hospital, Auchi, were reportedly kidnapped as they returned home from work along City Pride Road, Igbira Camp, near their residence.

Following the abduction, the family reportedly received a ransom demand of N200 million from the kidnappers on Saturday, January 3rd.
However, on Monday, January 5th, a video circulated on social media showing a corpse abandoned by a riverside, alleged to be Abu Tahir Babatunde, prompting public outrage.
While confirming the unfortunate development, the command’s public relations officer, ASP Eno Ikoedem, said investigations into the incident commenced immediately after the report of the abduction was received on 2nd of January, 2026.
She expressed sympathy for the tragic turn, assuring that efforts are being intensified to rescue the surviving brother, who is still believed to be in captivity, and to apprehend all those responsible for the crime.
“We urged residents to remain calm,we are assuring the public that the investigation remains active and coordinated to prevent further incidents”
