Benin City – The Edo State Police Command has confirmed that it has launched a full-scale investigation into the violent incidents that occurred during political activities organised by the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Benin City on Tuesday, February 24, 2026.
According to a statement from the Command, the first disturbance occurred at about 2.55 p.m. at the ADC State Secretariat on Ogbelaka Street, off Sapele Road. Hoodlums allegedly infiltrated the gathering shortly after the programme had officially ended and most dignitaries had left. The miscreants reportedly caused panic, chased attendees away, and vandalised chairs and canopies arranged outside the venue.
“Police patrol teams responded promptly to a distress call, but the suspects fled on sighting operatives. No casualty was recorded at the scene. However, during the ensuing stampede, one woman sustained injuries not related to gunfire. She was treated at a nearby chemist and later discharged,” the Command stated.
Security has since been reinforced around the secretariat and its environs to prevent any further breakdown of law and order.
In a related incident, the Command reported receiving another distress call at about 3.48 p.m. alleging that gunshots were heard at the residence of the ADC Leader and former Edo State Governor, Chief John Odigie Oyegun.
“On arrival, police operatives observed signs of malicious damage, including shattered rear windscreens and damage to parts of vehicles parked outside the residence. No casualty was recorded,” the statement added.
The Commissioner of Police, Edo State Command, CP Monday Agbonika, has ordered a full-scale investigation to identify, apprehend, and prosecute those responsible for the attacks.
As of the time of this report, no arrests have been made, and the police have appealed to the public to provide any useful information that could aid the investigation.
