Some masked youths on Wednesday were alleged to have attempted to burn down the new Edo State campaign office of the African Democratic Congress along Ogbelaka Street, Benin City.
According to the State party Chairman, Ken Odion, the incident occurred at about 8 pm on Wednesday.
The destruction and attempted arson on the new Edo State African Democratic Congress Secretariat along Ogbelaka Street in Benin City were visible.
It was observed that the sliding windows were destroyed while the party’s banners and flags were torn and brought down.
Edo State Chairman of the African Democratic Congress, Ken Odion, and brother to the landlord of the affected property, Barrister Chris Aghughu, described the incident as unfortunate.
The ADC chairman alleges that those responsible are thugs of the APC, as they are scared of the opposition and the increasing growth of the party in the state ahead of the 2027 general election.
“I don’t understand why the APC will send their thugs to come destroy and burn down our new secretariat just because they know we are waxing stronger, but let me assure you that no amount of intimidation will bring us down”
Others who spoke were of the view that political violence, characterised by physical and psychological acts aimed at injuring or intimidating political opponents, should be discouraged ahead of the next general election.
Though no statement has been issued by the APC leadership over the allegations, an official who prefers his name not to be mentioned denied the claim of the APC, saying the APC is too busy with relevant things than getting itself involved with trivial issues concerning a small party like the ADC.
