The All Progressives Congress governors expressed disapproval of the way party presidential candidate Bola Tinubu handled choosing Senator Kashim Shettima as his running mate on Monday during a meeting with Muhammadu Buhari.
When the governors visited the President in his Daura house, it took the President's intervention to calm them down and persuade them to back the Tinubu-Shettima ticket.
The APC candidate reserved the right to choose his running mate, according to sources at the President's secret meeting with the nine APC governors, but they had not finished talking to Tinubu before he went ahead and announced Shettima.
Because of the region's significant vote power, the North-West governors favoured Atiku Bagudu, the governor of Kebbi State, or Nasir El-Rufai, the governor of Kaduna State.
When the governors found out that Tinubu had chosen Shettima, they reportedly became furious. On Sunday, Tinubu had previously admitted that he hadn't even told Shettima that he had chosen him to be his running partner.
The Chairman of the Progressive Governors Forum, Abubakar Bagudu, told journalists at the conclusion of the meeting that the governors were startled by the selection of Shettima as the APC vice-presidential candidate, confirming their surprise at Tinubu's announcement.
He said, “We were pleasantly surprised when Asiwaju Ahmed Tinubu announced in Daura on Sunday that Senator Kashim Shettima was the vice-presidential candidate. We were happy that it was no less a person than Senator Shettima who was announced the vice-presidential candidate.©Standard Gazette, 2021.
