- Lieutenant, 3 policemen were killed in the gun duel
Nigerian Chief of Army Staff Lt. Gen.Ibrahim Attahiru has raised encomiums on troops, police and OPERATIVES of the Department of State Service ( DSS) for the way and manner they neutralized the leader of the Independent People Of BIAFRA ( IPOB) Ikonson in Imo state.
In the early hours of Saturday, 24 April 2021, a joint team of security OPERATIVES drawn from the Army, Police, and the DSS invaded the hideouts of militias in AWOMAMA village in the Oru local government area of Imo state, where they engaged them in a gun duel.
The joint security team is in the Southeastern part of Nigeria to put an end to the frequent attacks on police and correctional facilities in the region.
In the offensive, the IPOB leader, IKONSO Commander believed to be terrorizing the South East, was killed, with several members of the group of the security network.
In the ensuing gun battle, a second lieutenant of the Nigerian Army and three OPERATIVES of the Police Intelligence Response Team( IRT) were killed.
In a statement, today in Abuja, the Director, Army Public Relations, Brigadier General Mohammed Yerima, said the security team engaged the insurgents after they first opened fire upon sighting the security team.
However, he said the team responded instantly and overran the outlawed IPOB gunmen, killing IKONSO and six of his members.
Yerima said the bodies of the Four security operatives who fought extensively had been taken to a military facility in Imo state.
Some fighting items were recovered from the insurgents.
They include three AK-47 rifles, Hard drugs, a Toyota Sienna Space bus and locally made guns.
Brig.Gen. Yerima assured that the team would neutralize the violent and deadly activities of the Eastern security network and the IPOB members in the South East.
He pledged the sustenance of the sting operation as enough intelligence has been gathered to take out the insurgents.
