The Obaseki Council has condemned the inhuman and humiliating assault meted out to their son, Dr Don Pedro Obaseki, by suspected hoodlums in Benin City on the 28th of December, describing the act as unacceptable and condemnable.
The Obaseki Council made this known during a press conference held in Benin.
A few days ago, a video showing Dr Pedro Obaseki being assaulted by some persons believed to be hoodlums went viral on social media.
The video has since generated widespread reactions from within and outside the country.
In a statement issued and signed by the Okhaigbe P.A., Daniel Igbinovia Obaseki, and the Secretary, Mr Ewere Obaseki, and read to journalists, the Council expressed strong dissatisfaction over the ugly incident but stated that the family would rely on competent authorities to handle the matter.
The Obaseki Council explained that they deliberately delayed stating to allow constituted authorities the opportunity to take appropriate action before making their position public.
“The Obaseki Council has watched a bit to digest the bizarre matter and await the reactions of constituted competent authorities before issuing this statement.
The scenes circulating in the public domain are despicable, savage, barbaric and wholly antithetical to the refined, disciplined, and cultured people of the Benin People. It is capable of reversing the image of Benin as the Home of Culture and peace. As a minimum first step, it should be roundly called out and
condemned”
The Council further stated that they are in full support of their son, Dr Pedro Obaseki, in his decision to pursue the matter to its logical conclusion lawfully.
“The Obaseki Council is deeply mindful of the exalted position of the Palace of the Oba of Benin as a unifying force and role model for ALL Benin People. Nothing should be done by non-Palace functionaries to diminish these.
In the interest of public order, justice, and societal balance, the Obaseki Council supports the use of lawful and impartial processes to ascertain the facts surrounding this incident and to hold accountable any persons found to have committed criminal acts. Accountability, pursued calmly and lawfully, is essential to prevent a dangerous descent into anarchy and to reassure law-abiding citizens that no one is above the law.
The Obaseki Council is in absolute support of Dr Don Pedro Agbonifo Obaseki’s action to seek full legal redress and recompense in this matter, in order to uphold the rule of law over jungle justice. We are confident that the law enforcement authorities will take up this matter to its logical conclusion”
They also urged members of the Obaseki family and their children to go about their normal duties without fear of intimidation, stressing that the name of the Obaseki Council remains honourable and respected.
