The Nigerian Association of Zoological Gardens and Wildlife Parks (NAZAP) has appealed to the Federal Government to ensure the release of the abducted Director of Ogba Zoo and Nature Park Benin, Edo State, Dr. Andy Ehanire.
Ehanire was kidnapped from the zoo premises by gunmen who killed three policemen in the process on September 24.
On the state of wildlife in the country, Morenikeji said five animals were critically endangered in Nigeria, and identified one of them, West African lion (Panthera leo leo) as being less than 250 mature individuals.
Speaking further on this and other ‘endangered’ animals, he said, “The lion population (by a 2004 census) in West and Central Africa was fragmented and estimated as comprising 1,800 individuals. Others include Cross River Gorilla, Cameroonian forest shrew, White-throated guenon and Red-eared guenon.
