He expressed his gratitude to the local community for their collaborative efforts in locating the corpses and rescuing 11 other individuals affected by the tragic incident.

The deceased students were identified as two males and one female. Grimah assured the public that the police had been tirelessly working day and night in their search and rescue mission for the missing students. “The three corpses of the missing students have been recovered. The police have been working day and night to rescue the missing students,” he stated.

Furthermore, the National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) confirmed on Monday that they had apprehended the boat operators responsible for the ill-fated voyage in Calabar.

The General Manager of Corporate Communication at NIWA, Jibril Darda’u, disclosed that preliminary investigations had revealed multiple factors contributing to the accident. These factors included overloading, engine malfunctioning, inclement weather, and heavy turbulence.

Darda’u emphasized that the boat in question was not duly registered with NIWA, and the jetty it departed from was also unapproved. Consequently, the operators were arrested, and the jetty was sealed. In relation to the rescued victims, Darda’u affirmed, “The 11 rescued victims were taken to the hospital, and they are now okay and discharged.”

In a statement, NIWA extended their condolences to the families, friends, loved ones, and the Medical Students Association for the loss of the three students. They offered prayers for strength and solace to cope with the irreparable loss. The statement also mourned the loss of the departed souls and conveyed deep sadness over the recovery of the missing corpses. “We feel very sad to announce that NIWA’s search and rescue team recovered the three missing corpses of the medical students that were involved in the boat mishap on Saturday, June 24, 2023, in Calabar waterways,” read the statement.

As investigations continue into the incident, authorities aim to uncover additional details about the circumstances surrounding the boat crash and take appropriate actions to prevent similar accidents in the future.
