In a scathing critique, Nimi Wariboko, a professor of Social Ethics at Boston University, has characterized the policies of Nigerian President Bola Tinubu as “knee-jerk” and devoid of a clear vision.
Wariboko asserts that Tinubu, who was unprepared for his position, has failed to produce tangible results with his policies and lacks a plan to mitigate the economic fallout from subsidy removal and other measures.
Appearing on Channels Television, Professor Wariboko remarked, “There’s no point complaining about (ex-President Muhammadu) Buhari. There’s no point complaining about the goodness or the expectation of Buhari.
Now, the ball is in his (Tinubu’s) court, and he has to do it because he said it was his turn.”
While acknowledging Tinubu’s political background, Wariboko contends that the absence of visible results challenges the accolades heaped upon the President.
Quoting the Bible, the professor stated, “If your strength fails you on the day of adversity, it is small.”
He emphasized that there is no indication of strength or a clear vision for the country’s future.
Nigeria currently grapples with rising inflation, food inflation, a foreign exchange crisis, economic hardship, and the high cost of living sparked by the removal of petrol subsidies.
The collapse of the foreign exchange window during the nine months of the Tinubu administration has led to an unprecedented dip in the Nigerian naira, plummeting from approximately N700/ last May to over N1500/ presently.
The cost of Premium Motor Spirit (petrol) has surged by over 350%, escalating from N184 per litre last May to over N600, depending on the location.
The struggling economy has raised concerns among economists, opposition parties, labour unions, and civil society organizations, urging the Tinubu administration to fulfil its campaign promises.
Despite the Federal Government rolling out some measures in recent weeks, Nigerians continue to bear the brunt of the high cost of living, intensifying the call for more effective economic policies from the Tinubu administration.
