Buhari should just legalize corruption
In the wake of the recent pardon granted by President Muhammadu Buhari to convicted former Governors of Plateau State, Senator Joshua Dariye; and Taraba State, Rev Jolly Nyame, Nigerians are of the opinion that the anti-corruption mantra of the present administration is nothing but a farce.
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission spent hundreds of millions of naira prosecuting the pardoned former governors spanning eleven years of legal battles.
A Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Femi Falana yesterday stated that President Muhammadu Buhari should release all thieves from the prison. In an interview with newsmen, he maintained that granting a presidential pardon to a certain group of people because of political gain is the height of evil and that if that's the case, no thief should be held in the prison.
Following the advice of the Presidential Advisory Committee on the Prerogative of Mercy, the National Council of State endorsed the pardon of Dariye, Nyame, and 157 other offenders on Thursday. The 12-member committee is led by Abubakar Malami, Minister of Justice and Attorney-General of the Federation, who was appointed by President Muhammadu Buhari in 2018.
Dariye and Nyame were both sentenced to prison for stealing N1.16 billion and N1.6 billion, respectively.©Standard Gazette, 2021.
