[COMMENTARY] Police, DSS, Army, NSDC Ready To Flush Out Criminals In Edo State

The Nigerian Police is a security organisation that has the constitutional responsibility of ensuring internal security in the country.

The Army is embedded by law to ensure that Nigeria’s territory is not encroached by any country. They are responsible for dealing with foreign invaders but can be drafted to complement internal security with minimal force.

Department of State Service (DSS) is constitutionally responsible for intelligence gathering which is processed for immediate action. That is why they are called “Secret Service”.

The Nigeria Security And Civil Defence Corps is designed to work with locals and ensure adequate security at the grassroots.

All these security agents combined have the constitutional powers to flush out criminal elements out of Edo state.

The combined patrol now undertaken by the security forces referred to as JOINT SECURITY PATROL in Edo state is a welcome development.

Due to the recent upsurge in criminal activities in Edo state, Governor Godwin Obaseki made a passionate appeal to the leadership of the various forces in Abuja to deploy their men to complement the efforts of the police in combating crime in Edo state.

The appeal was yielded which prompted all the various service chiefs to release their men to Edo state.

For instance, men of the 4 Brigade of the Nigerian Army have been on the ground with army vehicles on patrol round all parts of Edo state.

The Inspector-General of Police, Mohammed Adamu approved the deployment of six Mobile Police units to Edo state.

The men have since arrived and are currently on patrol, using the Armoured Personnel Carriers of the police.

One of such Armoured Personnel Carriers is now permanently stationed at the kings square in Benin city to forestall any attack by criminals.

Edo state commissioner of Police, Johnson Babatunde Kokumo recently announced that the security forces in Edo had uncovered plans by some suspected armed robbers to attack Banks and other commercial places in the state.

The intelligence report has now led to a tightened security in the state, just as all the security forces in Edo state say, they have the CAPACITY, WILL and STRENGTH to deal with any person or group of persons that take criminality as hobby or profession.

The security forces say adequate equipment have been deployed towards ensuring that the people of Edo state have a crime-free yuletide.

So many arrests have been made since the joint security task force started operation in Edo state.

A lot of criminals that have been identified are now on the run with particular reference to those who escaped from the two correctional centres in Benin city.

The identity of the over 2,000 prison escapees are now known and security agents are on their trail.

The Oko-Ogba areas including Ebo and Irhirhi on Airport road in Benin city are now becoming crime infested as some kidnapping and armed robbery incidents have been reported in those areas severally.

Some land developers in that part of the city have been robbed and kidnapped at the site while supervising their projects.

They ended up giving out the money meant to develop their projects to the kidnappers as ransom.

The Ogba river in that axis of Benin city is now like a get-away for the suspected kidnappers who have at different times seized their victims and taken them through Ogba river to an unknown destination.

Such kidnapped victims go through serious humiliations as they are mostly traumatised even after parting with a huge sum of money as ransom.

A recent case was a pregnant woman Mrs Joy Okwudili who was kidnapped on that route at about 07.30 am when she was taking her children to school.

There is Marine Police in Edo state which was inaugurated recently.

The time to deploy the Marine Police to IYEKOGBA IN BENIN CITY IS NOW.

Their deployment will help forestall frequent KIDNAPPINGS on that route.

But, before the deployment of Marine Police to Iyekogba, the joint security team in Benin city should put up a roadblock in the area or nipping point with a STOP AND SEARCH process joined with the regular motorised patrol.

The service commanders of the various security agencies in Edo state must meet regularly if possible every 48 hours to review their security arrangement.
They must regularly evaluate and re-evaluate their security architecture.

The peace in Edo state must be sustained.

Therefore, all hands must be on deck to ensure that the people of the state sleep with their two eyes closed.

Let us look forward to a prosperous 2021 in PEACE.
