A group of activists have kicked against the brutalisation of one of their own from Edo north, calling for justice for activist Okhai Okhani.

The group made the call while holding a press conference in Benin to seek justice and condemn the brutal treatment and attempted murder of one of their own, Okhai Okhani, a human rights activist from Edo North and president of the Edo North Unity Forum Worldwide.

In unity, the vibrant comrades chanted solidarity songs, identifying with the wounded Comrade Okhai Okhani as he narrated how he was brutalised on July 26th, 2025,  while attending the annual elective representatives meeting at Auchi council Hall, in Estako West Local Government Area of Edo State.

Mr Okhani said 3 Hilux vehicles with over 50men stormed the meeting and started shooting. They threw him like a goat inside one of the Hilux vehicles and drove him to a deserted area, where he was brutally beaten to stupor, before they handed him to the Auchi Area Commander, ACP Lawrence Adjihiu, who unlawfully detained him for over four (4) hours in a cell, despite his critical condition.

“If not for God who rescued me, I would have been dead by now because I was beaten to a state of stupor for what offence I can’t say till now.

“We took permission before the meeting was held, as I am not a member of any political party, but I was beaten for no cause.”

A human rights activist, Comrade Edokpayi and the Edo North Youth Forum committee chairman, Fred Elakhe, described the attack as gruesome.

They appealed to the Edo State government and relevant authorities to ensure that the injustice is duly investigated and the Perpetrators brought to book, as such an act is capable of bringing Edo to disrepute.
