Coronavirus: Edo Govt Bans Street Trading

As the COVID-19 pandemic spread further, Edo State government has announced a ban on street trading across the state.

This is in addition to the restriction of movement and social distancing as parts of measure placed to curtail the spread of the virus.

Edo State currently has 15 confirmed cases and 1 death making it one of the worst-hit in the country.

The Deputy Governor Philip Shaibu, who is also the Chairman, the technical committee of Edo State’s COVID-19 taskforce disclosed this while briefing journalists in Benin on Thursday.

Shaibu said the government will continue to make decisions in the best interest of Edo people.

He said, “As part of these measures, we hereby announce a ban on street trading to restrict contacts among people and enforce social distancing. This is in light of the fact that markets have been moved to public school premises to facilitate trading in essential commodities such as foodstuffs and medicine.”

The Edo State Health Commissioner, Patrick Okundia who was also at the event said the government has set up screening centres across Oredo including six primary healthcare centres and four private hospitals to ensure that 500,000 persons are screened with the ultimate goal of testing 5,000
