It is two weeks since Edo state recorded its first index case of COVID-19 PANDEMIC and another two cases have been Confirmed in the State.
This brings the number of cases recorded in the state as of Monday, April 6, 2020, to Eleven Confirmed cases.
Addressing newsmen in Benin City, the Commissioner for Health, Hon Patrick Okundia disclosed that, two more persons have tested positive for Coronavirus.
According to him, About 234 Persons are being traced, they have been able to find out Eleven Confirmed.
Earlier declaration by the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) disclosed that Edo State had two new cases.
The tweet read, “Ten new cases of COVID-19 have been reported in Nigeria: 6 in Lagos, 2 in FCT and 2 in Edo.”
The state’s Commissioner for Health, Dr Patrick Okundia, who made the confirmation explained that “Our people have been told, but the message we are getting is that our people are not taking these messages seriously. This is a serious business. The fight against coronavirus disease has been on in the state.
“As we are receiving new cases every day, the state has been prepared in fighting this disease by providing different isolation centres across the state.
Continuing, he said, “We have four isolation centres in the state. One is at the Central Hospital Auchi, another one is at Irrua Specialist Hospital, we have one at the University of Benin Teaching Hospital and one at Stella Obasanjo Hospital.
“The state has also provided a holding centre at the Stella Obasanjo Hospital where suspected cases of coronavirus who are awaiting results are going to be kept.
“Anybody with symptoms should go straight to Stella Obasanjo Hospital, doctors and nurses have been trained to attend to such people,” he stated.
Earlier on his part, the Deputy Governor of Edo State, Rt Hon Comrade Philip Shaibu, says after due consultation and decision reached with stakeholders, it has announced the closure of all Markets in the state, effect twelve midnight Tuesday.
Comrade Shaibu made the declaration while briefing newsmen In Benin City, following the continuous spread of the pandemic disease.
The State Government directed the shutdown of markets in the state from Wednesday, April 8, 2020, for the commencement of fumigation of the facilities.
According to him, “All markets in Edo State are to be shut down effective from Wednesday, April 8, 2020. The state government will undertake the fumigation of the markets from the day of closure”.
He also urged members of the public to embark on the use of face masks, as the Government would no longer tolerate any form of disobedience to its directives.
Shaibu maintained that all Markets will temporarily relocate to primary school fields within the closest vicinity.
