Following the tragic deaths of approximately twelve individuals due to renewed cult hostilities between rival groups in Benin, the Edo State government has issued a response to these senseless killings.
In a statement, the State Government expressed its deep concern regarding the resurgence of cult-related violence in certain areas of the state. A release from the governor’s office, signed by media aide Bugie Okuemoi, revealed that Governor Okpebholo had taken proactive measures after last year’s cult-related conflicts by convening a series of important meetings with leaders of groups suspected of engaging in cultism.
Mr. Okuemoi noted that firm agreements were established during these meetings, which included warnings to cult members and holding leaders accountable for their actions. The governor emphasized that the state would no longer tolerate the senseless killings of youths or the destabilization of communities.
Regrettably, recent developments suggest that some individuals and groups have chosen to disregard this understanding. In light of this, the governor has directed security agencies to take decisive action to address the situation. Those who challenge the authority of the state will face the full consequences as outlined in the Edo State Anti-Cultism and Kidnapping Law; no one is exempt from this law.
Part of the statement reads, “This administration remains unshaken in its commitment to rid Edo State of cultism, criminality, and all threats to peace and order. We urge all law-abiding residents to remain calm and continue with their daily activities.
The security agencies are fully mobilized and working around the clock to restore and maintain peace.
The Okpebholo administration is committed to building a safe, stable, and prosperous Edo State, and no amount of intimidation or criminal behaviour will hinder that goal.
