The Governor of Edo State, Senator Monday Okpebholo, on Friday said the death penalty awaits any kidnapper caught in Edo State, which will be executed specifically by hanging, just as he expressed his administration’s readiness to sign death warrants of convicts.
Gov. Okpebholo disclosed this at an interactive session with leaders and members of the Arewa community in Esan land at the Uromi Town Hall.
The Edo State House of Assembly, before this development, had passed a bill amending the Kidnapping Prohibition Amendment Law and Related Matters 2013.
The bill prescribes the death penalty for kidnappers and mandates the confiscation and demolition of properties used in the commission of their crime.
Leveraging on this template, Gov Okpebholo told members of the Arewa Community that his administration would not tolerate insecurity, killing and kidnapping anymore in the State.
He assured that criminal elements in the State will be dealt with ruthlessly by the law.
Chairman, Arewa Community in Edo Central, Alhaji Bawa Umar, thanked the governor and the Onojie of Uromi, HRH Anselm Aidenojie the Second, for the peace that has been restored in Uromi.
He noted that the governor is doing well in terms of security in the State, and the Arewa community will support his administration to ensure it succeeds.
Earlier, the Chairman of Uromi Cattle Market, Alhaji Isah Muhammad and Edo Central APC Senatorial Leader, Gen. Cecil Esekhaigbe, retired, said the state government will commence the recruitment of some Hausa youths into vigilance groups to strengthen the security system.
