Some awaiting trial inmates, especially the recaptured escapees, protested in the centre, which almost resulted in a prison break on Thursday.

There was a confrontation between some awaiting trial inmates and others already convicted.

There was serious external security reinforcement from the Edo state police headquarters and other law enforcement agencies.

A statement by DSC Aminu Suleiman, the Edo state Public Relations officer of the correctional custody, said, “The situation has been completely controlled, and the Custodial Centre is calm.

There was no escape or death reported.

Sister security agencies showed solidarity by drafting their men around the outer perimeter fence to compliment Correctional Service Armed Squad personnel to ensure total security of the custodial Centre”.

He said further that “Controller of Corrections Felix Lawrence wishes to assure the general public that they should go about their normal business without any fear”.

The prison spoke person said the Controller has instituted an investigation into the incident to unravel the immediate and remote causes of the disturbance.
