The Edo State Waste Management Board has demolished makeshift shops and shanties erected by traders within the Kings square areas and walkways in Benin metropolis.
The board, in collaboration with members of the committee on clean up Edo State, carried out the exercise yesterday along Lagos Street, Mission road, Ibiwe and Ekenhuan road between 12am and 5am.

A trader, Ikechukwu Agu, whose shop was demolished, said: “I don’t know what to do now because I borrowed money from LAPO micro-finance bank and I don’t know how I would pay back with the demolition now.”
The traders alleged that over 10,000 traders have been displaced.
The General Manager, Edo State Waste Management Board, Aiyamenkhue Akonofua, said the traders were given notice before the demolition exercise.
He said the Godwin Obaseki-led government was determined to sustain the fight against street trading as well as ensure that traders are perpetually kept away from trading on walkways.
