Early Morning Inferno Razes House In Benin, One Dead

A popular middle-aged woman known as Aize has been killed in an early morning inferno.

The incident happened at No. 64, First East Circular Road, Benin City, Edo State, on Saturday, 31 July 2021.

Standard Gazette gathered that the fire started around 12.30 am from the ground floor and spread upstairs.

The fire razed through properties, including shops, attached to the house, belonging to private individuals.

However, the early intervention of the Edo state fire service prevented the fire from spreading to other houses in the neighbourhood.

At press time, men from the Esigie Police Division in Benin city are sighted evacuating the completely burnt deceased person to the mortuary.

One of the residents, Mr Charles, who spoke with Standard Gazette, said, "I was fast asleep when l heard people shouting 'fire', 'fire', 'fire', I quickly got up, and then I saw heavy fire in the storey building.

"I joined to make efforts to put out the fire, but it has already engulfed the whole house".

Another resident who said he was unaware of the cause of the inferno said, "I really don't know, sir. I can not actually tell. The police should investigate if it were deliberate".
