Edo State Commissioner of Police, CP Abutu Yaro, has ordered the arrest of four of his officers and a couple for murder.

The suspects had murdered a member of the vigilante, Ikponmwonsa Aikpitanyi, in the Obazee area of New Benin in Benin City, Edo State.

The incident happened on 22 April 2022 at about 11:30 pm during a rescue mission.

The arrested officers are Inspector Igere Victor, Sgt. Umhenin Stanley, Sgt. Okongor Ojong and Cpl. Monday Joel.

The police arrested Mr and Mrs Sunday Egboh for conspiracy and murder.

Officers were called to the area by Sunday Egboh, who alleged that some hooligans suspected to be cultists attempted to rape his wife, Mrs Rose Sunday.

The patrol team led by Inspector Igere Victor arrived at the scene and met commotion.

Attempting to scare the crowd, an officer shot fire and hit Ikponmwonsa Aikpitanyi on the chest, killing him on the spot.

The Edo State police command says it received the news in shock, describing the officers' action as "unacceptable and unprofessional."

The police Commissioner said that under his watch will not condone acts of misconduct that are inimical to the peace and safety of law-abiding citizens of Edo State.

CP Yaro directed the Deputy Commissioner of police in charge of the state Criminal Investigation Department to intensely investigate the matter.

The Commissioner, therefore, appealed to the general public to be calm as justice would be served soon.
