The publicity secretary to Nigerian Bar Association NBA, Benin Branch, Douglas Ogbankwa, believes that stakeholders must engage more on researches while speaking on the rights of Nigerian Citizens including fundamental, economic, anti-domestic violence, child and tenancy rights.

Speaking recently in Benin City, on the fundamental and inviolable human rights to life, personal liberty, fair hearing, private life, thoughts, expression of the press, association, movement, and freedom from discrimination and, Ogbankwa urged stakeholders to conduct more researches that will avail them the opportunity to know their rights.
These rights, he said, are provided for from section 33 to section 43 respectively of the 1999 Nigerian Constitution as amended.
While speaking further, he added that there are also laws which are not in the constitution but provided for by acts of parliament, edicts by the house of assembly and also the police act.
He explained that as a Nigerian, no police has the right to check your phone, laptop or car boot.
He also noted that Police do not have the right to indiscriminately arrest a citizen or ask for statement without eye witness or legal counsel. He described such moves by the police as illegal duties.
Ogbankwa, stated that there are authorities such as Police complaint Services, Nigerian Police X- squad amongst others where such actions can be reported to.
According to him, “the problem is that most Nigerians do not read or make research about their rights”. I am very sure you will get justice. A lot of these erring officers have been dismissed from the police.
The reason you hardly hear or see it published is that it may contradict strategies implored by the leadership of the Nigeria security framework. Citizens must embark on carrying out researches to get firsthand information about their rights”.
Ogbankwa also agreed that it was also essential for police officers to work on themselves and be well informed on these rights as a necessity for their operations; stressing that, it was also imperative on citizens to be deterrent and know the tactics used in dealing with issues of human rights.
