Edo NULGE protests non-payment of training fund

BENIN — NIGERIA Union of Local Government Employees, NULGE, Edo State chapter, has, staged a peaceful protest over the delay in the release of the one percent statutory allocation training fund meant for staff of the local government areas in  the state.

The protest, which kicked-off at the union’s secretariat on Okhoro Road, Benin City, took the workers to the office of Commissioner for the Ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Chief Lucky James.

Addressing newsmen, state President of  the Union, Mr. Edward Ilenikhena, accused  the ministry of not remitting the fund to the Local Government Service Commission in the last six months, a situation, he said, had retarded  the growth in training and retraining of council staff.

He said: “We are protesting to express our grievances over the delay in the release of the one percent statutory allocation training funds for staff of the local government in the last six months. The Union had used all avenues to get to the root of the matter through negotiation but to no avail.

We have first hand information that the money had been deducted from the council’s account through the ministry only to be withheld as same had not been remitted  to the Commission. The union wants to know why it has not been released since then.”

Mr James, meantime, denied the allegation, saying that Governor Adams Oshiomhole was aware of the issue, though  he promised to meet with the executive of the union to brief them on the issue.
