The Edo State Police Command has announced the arrest and prosecution of a 24-year-old social media content creator, popularly known as “Madam Oil Rice,” for circulating a fabricated claim of being kidnapped along Upper Sakponba Road, Benin City.

In a statement issued on Saturday, the public relations officer of the Command stated that the suspect, identified as Osarobo Omoyemen, had published a video in which she stated she was kidnapped, released by Police personnel, and then detained at Akpata Police Station, where she said she paid N10,000 as bail.

The Police spokesperson stated that following receipt of the report, an investigation was initiated, and findings indicated that the account was untrue and staged.

However, the suspect reportedly confessed during interrogation that she created the video solely to attract followers to her TikTok page.

The Command further disclosed that she deleted an earlier video in which an accomplice could be heard urging viewers to follow her account, clearly exposing the motive behind the false claim.

“The content was  misleading and capable of inciting public hostility against security agencies. The suspect has been arrested and will be charged in court. Efforts are ongoing to identify and apprehend other accomplices involved in the act.”

The Command warned members of the public against generating or circulating fake, inciting, or misleading content capable of causing panic or disturbing public peace, and urged citizens to verify information before sharing.
