Edo Police Command Arrest Serving Officer For Murder
The police have arrested a serving police sergeant attached to Edo state police command in Benin over the death of a middle-aged man.
The policeman, in the company of other operatives, was arresting a suspect along First East Circular Road in Benin city, Edo state, when he mistakenly fired a gunshot that killed a man in a moving car.
A statement signed by the Edo state Police Public Relations Officer SP Bello Kontongs said the policemen went on a mission to arrest a murder suspect identified as Ebuka Nwaechie when the incident happened.
According to the Edo state police command image-maker, “The command deeply regret to inform the general public that in the process of arrest, a member of the police team fired a shot in a bid to restrain the fleeing suspect from escaping.
“Unfortunately, it penetrated a moving vehicle and hit one of the occupants named Moses Adam and caused him bodily injury on his thigh.
“The victim was rushed to Edo specialist hospital where he was pronounced dead despite best efforts.
“The member of the police team involved in the shooting has been identified and arrested.
“The erring officer would go through an administrative trial that would determine his culpability”.
The statement expressed the condolence of the Edo state police commissioner, CP Philip Ogbadu, to the family of the deceased.
The police commissioner has ordered an extensive investigation on the incident as the police will not hesitate to deal with any erring or overzealous police officer who acts unprofessionally while on duty.
However, the said Ebuka Nwaechie was finally arrested.
He will be investigated and charged to court for murder.
