Edo state, grappling with a significant poverty issue, has taken a substantial step towards alleviating the plight of the underprivileged. Governor Godwin Obaseki has set up a N1 billion monthly feeding program, a monumental initiative aimed at providing sustenance to those in need.

Governor Obaseki has been unequivocal in his assertion that the feeding program is a testament to his commitment to serve God and humanity, not a political manoeuvre.

On Saturday, 4 May 2024, he declared in Benin that government representatives would not be included in using the budget and distributing food to people.

The governor has entrusted the implementation of the feeding program to Christian state leaders, a decision rooted in the belief that ‘people who are hungry go to the Church, not the government house.’ This selection process was based on the presence of churches in the areas of need and the potential for effective communication.

In addition, Obaseki stated, “We are also doing something similar for the Muslims because we want an inclusive Edo in which all residents should feel like they are a part of the state.”

He said, “I met with the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) in Edo State, and I promised to give them one billion naira a month for the first three months.”We examined Edo’s poverty map to see how many impoverished people we could feed. Are there churches in this area, and if so, how can we get in touch with them? I am here because I dislike commissioning, but the chairman (CAN) has asked you to attend so that others are aware that this program is available.

“However, what we are doing is a government obligation; the only distinction is that the church is obtaining the supplies, and you are not removing the funds from Edo state.”

Apostle Irekpono Omoike, the chairman of the organizing committee and the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), praised the governor for the effort in his remarks.

Already, 60,000 sacks of rice of 10 kg had been bought for distribution as a start.
