The Edo State Government has revealed a purported scheme by the All Progressives Congress (APC) to deploy thugs disguised as officials of the Edo State Security Network (ESSN) to attack participants in the upcoming #EndBadGovernance protests.
The announcement was made by Chris Osa Nehikhare, the Edo State Commissioner for Communication and Orientation, who stressed the state’s commitment to protecting the right to protest while maintaining public order.
Nehikhare stated, “The Edo State Government has uncovered plots by the All Progressives Congress (APC) to mobilise thugs who will disguise themselves as officials of the Edo State Security Network (ESSN) also known as vigilante network to attack protesters during the #EndBadGovernance demonstration.”
He reassured that security agencies have been mobilised to ensure law and order during the protests.
The commissioner condemned the alleged subterfuge, warning protest leaders to be vigilant and cautious of any individuals attempting to infiltrate their ranks in vigilante uniforms.
He reiterated the government’s dedication to safeguarding lives and property in Edo State and maintaining peace and progress.
In a discussion with the Standard Gazette, Nehikhare argued that APC would orchestrate disruption of the protest because it believes it would benefit the party in the upcoming election.
He argued that the APC is concerned the protests could damage the reputation of the APC-led federal government.
Nehikhare highlighted past instances where similar tactics were employed, referencing the attack at Benin Airport, which resulted in the death of a police officer.
He emphasised that the #EndBadGovernance protests are primarily directed at the APC federal government, criticising their handling of the economy, inflation, cost of living, and overall governance.
“The protest is against the APC government. The protest is in favour of PDP in the state because the protesters are going to be complaining about bad governance, the inflation fold, the cost of living, the way things have turned, and the insecurity,” Nehikhare explained.
He argued that the APC’s strategy aims to create chaos and possibly prompt a federal intervention, potentially leading to a state of emergency that could advantage the APC.
He accused the APC of trying to discredit the Edo State Security Network for their benefit.
The commissioner acknowledged that while the state government has its own responsibilities, the federal government’s policies are primarily to blame for the current economic situation.
He pointed out that decisions on fiscal policies, revenue from oil, subsidies, and wages fall under the federal government’s jurisdiction, which is controlled by the APC.
This revelation comes amid heightened political tensions as Edo State approaches its election period, with various parties vying for control and influence. The Edo State Government’s statement underscores the complexities and stakes involved in the current political climate.
