Edo Vigilante Member Shoots Dead A Woman, Injures A Toddler In Benin

A Member Of The Edo State Vigilante Group Has Been Arrested In Benin City.

Chigozie Nwaneri, 37, was arrested after accidentally shooting a woman and wounded a toddler at a funeral.

The trigger happy Chigozie was arrested at the crime scene on Saturday, 6 November 2021 in Upper Mission extension in Benin City, Edo State.

Standard Gazette gathered that the Vigilante member joined other members to attend the funeral of their colleague who had recently passed away.

At the funeral, Chigozie fired several gunshots into the air as last respect for their fallen colleague.

Standard Gazette correspondent Festus Alenkhe gathered that the bullet hit one of the mourners, a 27-year-old woman.

SG learned that the woman died on the spot, while a seven-month-old baby, also hit with the bullets, is currently in a life-threatening condition at the hospital.

The woman is believed to be a relation to the buried vigilante.

According to the suspect, “I was firing into the air and was surprised when people started shouting that my gun had killed somebody.

“I believed that it was one of the cartridges that got hooked in the gun that hit the woman after it exploded. I am deeply saddened over the incident”.

Edo State Police Public Relations Officer SP Bello Kontongs, who confirmed the arrest, said the suspect would be charged to court for murder.

The Edo State Police Public Relations officer said, “most of the vigilante members should be careful with weapons”.
