Benin city – Edo State Commissioner For Women Affairs and Social Development, Mrs. Blessing Maigida has formally announced the re-opening of “my Mummy Orphanage, Benin City, which was closed down by her Ministry, April this year over an alleged sale of baby.
Hon. Maigida, while making the announcement yesterday in Benin City explained that the re-opening of the orphanage became necessary following the thorough investigation carried out by the committee set up by her ministry headed by her, adding that, after the investigation, the findings proved that there was no trace of baby sale by the proprietress of the orphanage, Rev. (Mrs.) Lato Osayi Bara.
According to the commissioner, the state child Rights law is against the selling of babies and used the opportunity to advised couples who are interested in adopting children to come straight to the ministry and follow due process and necessary procedures for the adoption rather than going through the orphanage as the activities of all orphanages are under the supervision of her ministry.
She also appealed to owners of orphanages to desist from illegal adoption of children, but they should direct any couple who is interested in adopting a child to come to the ministry so that due process will be followed.
In her response, the proprietress of My Mummy Orphanage, Rev. (Mrs.) Lato Osayi Bara expressed gratitude to the state government and the commissioner for reopening her orphanage home for normal services, adding that her detractors will not stop her from rendering her humanitarian services.
