Eight Health Workers Rescued As Police Arrest Suspected Kidnapper

A 32-year-old suspected KIDNAPPER has been arrested by men of the Anti Kidnapping Squad of the Edo state police command.

The suspect identified as Apay Julius belongs to a kidnapping syndicate terrorising IYEKOGBA, Airport road and environs in Benin city.

It was gathered that the suspect and his alleged gang members had stormed Umegbe road near the river in Iyekogba area of Benin city where they positioned themselves to kidnap anyone in sight.

Their victims are usually ferried to an unknown destination through Ogba River near Benin city.

A group of health workers from Oredo local government area of Edo state were returning from Umegbe village where they went for Immunisation exercise.

The bus conveying the health WORKERS was intercepted by the alleged daredevil and heavily armed kidnappers.

The health workers were then led into the river when a decoy vehicle which had some policemen spotted them forcing their victims into the river while a boat was on standby.

Upon sighting the police, the hoodlums opened gunfire.

The police, however, retaliated swiftly where several other gunmen were severely wounded as they escaped into the river with bullet wounds.

The suspect now in police custody Apay Julius was arrested at the scene of the crime.

In an interview with Standard Gazette Crime Correspondent Festus Alenkhe, the suspect said: ” l was asked by my friends to join in the kidnapping operation. We came to the river bank by boat and we planned to take all our victims to the creek for ransom”.

The suspect further stated that they had two AK47 rifles during the operation but said they were overpowered by the policemen.

The Police said the suspect will be profiled and arraigned in court soon.
