Yakub Yusuf, a 23-year-old ex-convict, was detained hours after leaving prison.

Yusuf was taken into custody by members of the Rapid Response Squad on Saturday morning, according to a statement made by the Lagos State Police spokesperson Benjamin Hundeyin on Thursday. After a non-governmental organization paid his fine following his conviction for theft at the Lagos State petroleum dump, Alausa, Ikeja, on November 1, 2022, he was freed from jail custody on Friday.
Yusuf was detained once more on Saturday after breaking into the offices of the Lagos State Fire Service. This time, he grabbed valve covers from a damaged old fire vehicle.
Recidivism is a common phenomenon in Nigeria and it has been documented that 40 percent of offenders will return to prison in Nigeria.
