The federal government yesterday announced it is proposing to revive 8,300 primary healthcare centres across the nation and make them functional.

The Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Professor Ali Pate, stated this during the Ministerial Press Briefing at Radio House, Abuja, yesterday, adding that there are also plans to expand and upgrade 17,000 primary healthcare centres in the next few years.

Pate highlighted that this expansion would renovate and equip these centres, making them fully functional and delivering essential services.

This includes immunisation, maternal and child health, non-communicable disease treatment, and facilitating referrals to secondary facilities, instilling hope for a healthier future.

The Minister emphasised that the success of this ambitious plan hinges on the active support and collaboration of the states, underlining the importance of their role.

He said: “We are also committed to retaining 120,000 frontline health workers.1,400 primary health care centers are now equipped to provide skilled birth attendance, funded through the NPHCDA and NHIA covering the 8,300 facilities.”

He said that contraception is to allow women to control their reproduction when they need it and also to choose and control their bodies as well as have quality reproduction health services.

The Minister added that the ministry has collaborated with the Kano state government and security agencies to close the open market where drugs are sold without control.
