From cattle rearer to daredevil kidnapper, Usman Mohammed in Police net in Edo State

Usman Mohammed, 30, came to Edo State to rear cattle but quickly discovered the easy way to make money through his friends.

The Police in Edo State arrested Mohammed on Saturday, 24 September 2022, after his five men gang kidnapped and murdered 37-year-old Segun Onyekanmi.

Usman and his cohorts murdered Onyekanmi in Uhen forest, Ovia North East local government area of Edo State.

Standard Gazette gathered that the kidnappers abducted three persons in the village and forced their victims into the forest before initiating calls to demand ransom.

Disappointed that the ransom wasn’t paid on time, SG learned that Usman and his gang shot and killed Onyekanmi.

After the negotiation failed, the victim’s family ran to the Police to report the matter, and an investigation was immediately launched.

The suspects were trailed to their hideouts in Uhen, and with intensive combing of the forest, the Police rescued two victims, Sunday Kinma and Margaret James.

Upon interrogation, Mohammed confessed that they had killed Onyekanmi and took the Police to the site where his body was dumped to rot.

The body was recovered and now deposited in the mortuary.

The suspect, Usman Mohammed, narrated his level of involvement, saying, “I am a cattle reader here. My friends told me that we should go and kidnap to make money. I then joined them in this village where we kidnapped three people.

“My other friend was just angry that the money did not come on time. He said he wanted to kill one of the men. I begged him not to kill the man, but I was surprised that he just used his gun to fire the man dead. I regret the killing”.

The Edo State police public Relations officer, SP Chidi Nwabuzor, who was in the forest with Newsmen, assured that the Police would be diligent in its investigation as it would ensure the arrest of other fleeing members of the gang.

In the meantime, Edo state commissioner of Police, CP Abutu Yaro, has directed the police crack team and other strike forces to immediately mobilize into the Bush and continue effectively combing to bring down the escaping suspects.
