The Governor Of Edo State Senator Monday Okpebholo has tasked journalists in the state with objectivity urging them to step up activities to stem the tide of fake news with dire consequences.
Gov. Okpebholo made the remark when he received the members of the NUJ Edo State Council led by the Chairman Comr Festus Alenkhe who paid him a courtesy visit.
This visit is the inaugural by the Comr. Festus Alenkhe led the state council of the NUJ since their re-election and to Gov. Okpebholo since its inauguration on November 12 last year.
Governor Okpebholo tasked journalists with objectivity to stem the tide of fake news while commending the goodwill he has enjoyed and the unity, which exists among members.
He promised to attend the council’s annual classic dinner as a mark of honour to journalists.
Chairman, NUJ Edo State Council, Comr. Festus Alenkhe said the visit is one of solidarity, noting that the union has made remarkable progress in addressing the scourge of fake news by setting up a team to profile journalists practising in the state.
This he said led to the successful screening and accreditation of 283 journalists practicing across the state.
The interaction was an opportunity by the Comr. Alenkhe led the union to
formally invite Governor Okpebholo to the annual NUJ classic dinner hosted by the state council on 8 February 2025.
The high point of the visit was the presentation of a congratulatory card and an invitation to the annual classic dinner of the union.
The Governor also received a copy of a compendium of practising journalists in the state.
