In a joint operation, men of the Nigerian Police Force, the Army and the Department of State Service (DSS) in the early hours of today, 24th April 2021, stormed the operational Headquarters of the INDEPENDENT PEOPLE OF BIAFRA (IPOB) in Awomama Village, Oru East LGA of Imo State.
The police authority accused the Insurgents of the attack on the Imo State Police command’s Headquarters and Imo state headquarters of the Nigerian Correctional Service on 5th April 2021.
Standard Gazette learned that they were also responsible for a series of deadly attacks on security personnel in the south East and south-south zones of the country.
Standard Gazette gathered that as the security forces approached the base of the bandits and engaged the gunmen in a gun duel.
The joint security forces fought back extensively and felled the overall commander of the insurgents in the Southeast popularly called “Ikonso” and other six members of the group.
The said Commander Ikonso is believed to be the coordinator of all the militia operations of the group.
The security team told Standard Gazette that Ikonso was the mastermind and coordinator of the attacks on the Imo state Police Headquarters and several other security and military personnel and facilities in the South East.
The operation is part of deliberate efforts by the Police and other security forces to quell the activities of shooters in Imo State and other States in the South East and South-South regions of the country.
After the fiercely gun battle, the security team recovered the remains of Ikonso Commander, and his co-fighters six (6) remains.
Several sophisticated weapons were recovered, including six(6) AK47 rifles, hundreds of ammunition of different brands.
Other items recovered include charms and bullet Proof.
However, three policemen and one soldier who sustained injuries in the deadly attacks receive treatment in the hospital.
The security team said it would announce the incident at a later date.
