Following the reintroduction of Environmental sanitation in Edo State, some members of the Task Force set up to monitor compliance in Ikpoba Okha have been alleged to have taken the law into their own hands and violated the fundamental rights of some of those arrested.
In a video which has now gone Viral, it was seen that some of the Taskforce members were brutally assaulting those arrested.
However, condemnation has continued to trail the incident.
Some civil society groups have condemned the barbaric act, saying the state governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, should ensure the issue is investigated and the perpetrators brought to book.
In the same vein, the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) Benin Branch (Lion Bar) Human Rights Committee vehemently condemn the egregious and unwarranted brutal assault meted out to two citizens by the Environmental Task.
In a statement issued, they described the act as reprehensible, which occurred within the Mobile Court premises and constitutes a gross infringement on the victims’ fundamental human rights, particularly their right to a fair hearing.
The Committee unequivocally asserts that the actions of the Environmental Task Force were ultra vires, exceeding their statutory powers and amounting to a flagrant disregard for the rule of law.
They, however, demand that those involved should be immediately identified and the perpetrators of the heinous act be fished out.
They also added that the authorities ensure that the perpetrators face the full wrath of the law and are brought to justice.
