Students in Imo State hit the streets of Owerri, the state capital, on Saturday to protest against the high cost of living, exorbitant school fees, poor infrastructural facilities and intimidation in their various tertiary institutions.

The students who, in their thousands, barricade the road appealed to the federal and state governments to stop incessant hikes in their school/tuition fees, undue extortion through handouts and textbooks, strengthen a serene/conducive learning environment and install medical equipment/ facilities such as electricity, boreholes, among others, for improved quality education and moral values.

The protesters comprised students from the Federal University of Technology, Owerri (FUTO); Imo State University, Owerri (IMSU); Alvan Ikoku Federal University of Education, Owerri; Federal Polytechnic Nekede and Imo State University of Agriculture and Environmental Sciences (UAES), Umuagwo, Ohaji.

The students, who also lamented the high cost of living/accommodation fees and hardship in Imo State occasioned by what they termed the government’s bad economic policy of the state and federal government, called for measures to cushion the effect on them.

The students called on Ahaneku Valentine Nzubechi, vice president of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), to assist them in bringing their message to the authorities.

Nzubechi assured the students that the federal and state governments would take notice of their concerns and requests to improve the quality of education.
