Unknown gunmen abducted the Chief Medical Director of the Irrua Specialist Hospital, Edo State, Prof. Sylvanus Okogbenin on Monday.

The kidnappers also killed two of the policemen attached to him.

The incident happened at Ramat Park Ikpoba-Okha Local Government Area on his way to Benin.

Last week, two Assistant Directors of the hospital were abducted and later freed after a substantial ransom was reportedly paid.

Two persons in the CMD’s convoy were also reportedly shot in the leg during the abduction.

An eyewitness, Elvis Omoregie, who spoke with NAIJA CENTER NEWS said “It all happened about 11 a.m this morning when five armed men and a lady stormed Ikpoba hill road by Ramat Park with an unidentified car and order a trailer driver that was on the same road with a gun to block the road.

“At this time there was a Lexus 470 going to Aduwawa side, as soon as they blocked the road they came down shooting sporadically while they walked towards the Lexus ordering the person inside to come down.

“Unfortunately, it was the CMD of Irua specialist hospital but no one yet and the person inside the car refused to come down. They shot straight to the car luckily the car was bulletproof.

“They started shouting and order the man to come down but refused they walk to the car and use the gun boot to destroy the side before opening the car; shot the first policeman who was sitting with the man and also shot the other sitting on the passenger seat, removed their guns and dragged the man out of the car asking him if he is not one for health ministry.

“They immediately dragged him into their car and zoom off”

The eyewitness also told NAIJA CENTER NEWS that the two unfortunate officers had a chance to open fire on the kidnappers were reluctant.

“So sad for the two police officers, they messed up, seriously. They had all the time to shoot first all, at least fire one or two among the kidnappers, but they didn’t.

The Edo State Police spokesperson, DSP Chidi Nwabuzor said the police has commenced an investigation into the incident.

Meanwhile, the Chairman of the Senior Staff Association of Universities Teaching Hospital Research Institute and Associated Institutions of Nigeria, Irrua branch, Comrade Emmanuel Igiechi disclosed the Union’s plan to protest against the insecurity in the area.

Ogiechi said the abduction of the CMB is an indication that staff of the hospital are being monitored by the kidnappers.

“This tells us how serious the security situation has become. It is a very dire situation we are in. The security agencies should strengthen their presence in Irrua and environs,” Igiechi said.
