Police officers have arrested a Medical doctor, Dr Ogbonnanya Chiamaka of Irrua Teaching Specialist Hospital, in Esan Central local government area of Edo State for child abuse.

The victim, a 13-year-old girl whose identity is concealed because she is underage, is a secondary school student of Emando.

It was gathered that the victim turned up in school on 22 June 2022 with her belongings looking frail, leading to her teacher's suspicion.

Upon interrogation, the young girl disclosed how she had been abused and requested to be returned to her biological mother instead of her guardian.

She told her teacher that her guardian had beaten her countless times, using a stick to reprimand her. She had been starved as part of her punishment.

The concerned teacher immediately reported the abuse to the appropriate authority for necessary action.

Dr Mrs Ogbonnaya Chiamaka, 41, was arrested on Friday, 24 June 2022.

A statement signed by the Edo state Deputy Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Jennifer Uchegbu, said Dr Ogbonnaya Chiamaka would be arraigned in court after completing the investigation.

The statement further said the Edo state Commissioner of police CP Abutu Yaro has reinstated his commitment to serving the good people of Edo state as he urged the citizenry not to relent in availing the command with prompt and useful information that will help curb the menace of criminal elements in Edo state.
