He is accused of making charms for suspected kidnappers who operate in the Edo North Senatorial District.

Ibrahim was shown to journalists on Tuesday, along with four suspected kidnappers and six other people. This happened at the police headquarters in Benin City.

While presenting the suspects, the Commissioner of Police, Patrick Daor, said the kidnapping suspects were caught in Niger State. He said police officers used intelligence to find them.

However, Ibrahim denied making charms for the suspects. He said he only prayed for one of them, Ahmadu Suleiman.

He explained that Suleiman’s mother had asked him to do this. He said: “Ahmadu Suleiman’s mother came to me and said I should be praying for her son, that he travels a lot, so I should pray for his safe trip to and from, and that is what I have been doing. I pray for him to have a safe trip.”

When police asked if he knew Suleiman had an AK-47 rifle, Ibrahim said he was aware that the suspect owned a gun.

Suleiman, who is 24 years old, also spoke through an interpreter. He admitted taking part in a kidnapping in Auchi. He said he worked with different kidnapping groups across Nigeria and always returned to his base in Niger State after each job.

He explained: “When we get to the community, we look for a beautiful house and shoot into the air, and in the process of scampering for their lives, they run out, and we hold them and take them to the bush and demand money. I got N1m from the Auchi operation, and that was the only kidnapping I involved myself in in that area.”

When asked if the group had helpers inside the communities, Suleiman said they did not. He added that they chose their targets by looking for expensive cars and large buildings.

The police also presented a 21-year-old suspect who is believed to have stolen a baby in the Ring Road area of Benin City. Officers also recovered a stolen vehicle.

The Police Public Relations Officer, Eno Ikoedem, said the arrests were possible because of intelligence work.

He asked the public to keep helping the police by giving useful information that could stop crime and help catch criminals.
