Protesting residents of Iyowa Community in Ovia North East LGA of Edo state in the early hours of Saturday blocked the Benin Akure road, calling on governments and security agencies to rescue them from the hands of kidnappers, who daily pick innocent citizens from their houses demanding ransom and killing others.
The situation, however, left many travellers stranded as no motorist was allowed to move.
The Residents of Iyowa, apparently disturbed by the turn of events in their community, took over the road and barricaded it at some strategic points, thereby preventing the free flow of traffic.
According to them, kidnappers now raid the community on a daily basis, carrying off their victims, demanding heavy ransom while killing others on the spot.
Narrating his ordeal, a young man whose wife, according to him, was abducted a few hours ago, pleaded with the government to come to his aid.
“We don’t sleep peacefully at home, and now my husband has been kidnapped. The money they are asking for, I don’t have; that’s why I am begging the general public and the state government to come to our rescue.
The police from Ekiadolor division tried to persuade the protesters to leave the road, but to no avail.
Soon, the Edo State Commissioner of Police, Monday Agbonika, arrived at the scene to appeal to the residents, but they turned a deaf ear, continuing to express their pain.
“We are appealing to you people to stop the protest. We are doing everything possible to bring sanity to the area, please.”
