There are indications that students who plan to take the University Matriculation Exams (UME) organized by the Joint Admissions Matriculation Board (JAMB) may miss 2024 exam because of the difficulties they are encountering while registering for their national identification number (NIN).
The situation has become unbearable and is causing a lot of pain to the applicants who are struggling to obtain their NIN for enrollment purposes.
However, most of the centres visited revealed that the crowd that besieged the venue was unprecedented, which suggests that it’s unrealistic for the students to complete their registration before the deadline for JAMB registration, which is February 24th 2024.
At the PZ Road Benin City Edo State headquarters of the National Identity Management Commission NIMC, the situation was sympathetic as applicants were seen not only in a rowdy mood but some were seen sleeping in an uncompleted building, apparently tired because they had waited for so many hours without results.
While narrating her ordeal, an Applicant, Joyce Osamuyi, said the situation is frustrating, saying she has been coming to the office for five days without luck.
She said,” Oga, we are seriously in a bad state in this country. Since morning, I have not eaten. I even slept over just to be sure it would get to my turn, but all to no avail.
Another applicant alleges that some persons have been collecting money from them, promising to help speed up the process.
The Applicant Osaigbovo Edosonwan said, “Some guys came to us demanding between N10,000 and N30,000 to help us depending on what we need it for.
I have been begging for 5k, but they refused.
A coordinator in one of the centres who preferred anonymity debunks the allegations of collecting money from applicants, saying those who do change their name are required to pay a legal fee of 15k.
On the issue of not attending to applicants on time, he said the fault lies with the headquarters because they don’t have sufficient machines, so they can’t do otherwise.
He, however, advised the applicants to be patient as everything is done to ensure every person is attended to.
The Federal Government has recently made the national identification number compulsory for virtually everything in the country.
