The Kano State Government has uncovered a significant payroll irregularity within local government councils, identifying 247 retired or deceased individuals whose names were still appearing on the payroll.
According to a statement released by the Press Secretary to the Secretary to the State Government, Musa Muhammad, and made available to Journalists on Saturday, these ghost workers were fraudulently drawing salaries totalling ₦27,824,395.40 in March 2025 alone.
“In a decisive move towards cleansing the state payroll, the Kano State Government has recorded a major milestone in its ongoing efforts to reform the salary administration system within the state civil service,” the statement read.

The discovery was made during a recent payroll validation exercise to enhance transparency and accountability in the public service. The exercise revealed a “disturbing irregularity” in the payroll system across several local government areas.
While investigations are still ongoing to determine the full scope of the fraud and identify those responsible, the government confirmed that the entire sum has been recovered and returned to the Local Government Treasury.
The statement emphasized the administration’s unwavering commitment to responsible governance and transparent financial management.
“The government remains resolute in its commitment to purging the payroll system of irregularities. Individuals found to be involved in this fraudulent activity will be identified and held fully accountable in accordance with the law,” it concluded.
