Armed men suspected to be kidnappers on Friday waylaid an 18-seater bus of the New Edo Line Transport Company and a Toyota Camry along the Benin-Akure Road of Edo State, abducting the occupants.
Edo state police public relations officer, CSP Moses Yamu, who confirmed the incident, disclosed that sixteen victims have so far been rescued, while security operatives are still on the trail of the kidnappers to secure the release of the remaining victims.
The attack, which took place at about 4:30 p.m. on Friday, was carried out by assailants who ambushed the bus and the car at gunpoint, before forcing the passengers into the forest.
A viral video from the scene captured a long queue of stranded vehicles on both sides of the highway, as motorists fled for safety.
Edo State Police Public Relations Officer, CSP Moses Yamu, who spoke to newsmen, revealed that the command has rescued sixteen of the kidnapped passengers, with efforts ongoing to safely rescue the remaining victims.
CSP Yamu further appealed to the public to cooperate with the police by providing credible information that could aid in dismantling criminal networks threatening the peace and security of Edo State.
“We want to assure the general public that the police is always at alert to safeguard the live of the public as the commissioner is doing everything possible make sure no live is lost as our operatives are combing the bushes to rescue others who are still in captive”
