The Labour Party National Transition Committee Chairman Of Mobilization, Recruitment and National Coordinator of Labour Party Patriotic Members Congress, Dr Oghogho Okundaye and a former local government chairman, Isiah Osifo, have described the Supreme Court judgement on local government autonomy as a welcome development.
They said the local government autonomy would greatly benefit the people at the grassroots level as it would also open a path to rural economic development.
On implementation by the leadership of the various local governments that will yield positive results beneficial to the people, the stakeholders said it will solely depend on their viability and mindedness.
The LP committee chairman and the former LG chairman advised local government chairpersons not to see the autonomy judgement as a Greek gift for looting but as an avenue to put in intensive developmental zeal, which will result in people-oriented projects.
They said the judgement should be an open avenue to streamline the running of the local government administration in the country so that what was supposed to be a blessing should not turn into a cause because of bad management of the 774 local governments in the country.
While the stakeholders favour local government autonomy, they are also keen on preventing any potential mismanagement of funds.
They propose a system that would hold the chairmen accountable to the people, ensuring that the funds are used for the intended developmental projects.
