At least 61 unclaimed bodies have been disposed of in Kenya’s lake city of Kisumu.
The new development came after the Kisumu county government, led by Governor Anyang’ Nyong’o, obtained a court order after their families failed to collect the remains.
The bodies have been lying in the morgues for several months. They were disposed of in mass graves in various public cemeteries within the County.
“We went to court. Of course, I signed the affidavit and we were given orders to bury the unclaimed bodies,” said Kisumu Director of Health Fred Oluoch.
According to Mr Oluoch, sixteen more bodies are set for disposal should their beloved ones fail to collect them in one week.
Kisumu County government had issued an order requiring all bodies to be collected from mortuaries within 48 hours of the death.
However, the government of Kenya stated that no dead body should stay in a morgue beyond 72 hours.
