A 23-year-old lady named Mary Olatayo has been detained by the Ogun State Police Command for reportedly selling her three-week-old baby boy for N600,000.

The suspect was detained as a result of a complaint from the baby's father, according to a statement released on Thursday by the state police public relations officer, SP Abimbola Oyeyemi.

He claimed that Mary became pregnant during this time, and he rented an apartment for her to live in while she gave birth to a boy. He continued by saying that three weeks after giving birth, the woman mysteriously vanished from the apartment with the baby, only to be discovered in a hotel where she had gone to "hook up" with another man.

The search for the baby's whereabouts was fruitless. The Divisional Police Officer of the Mowe Division, SP Folake Afeniforo, sent detectives to the location where the suspect was apprehended and taken to the station based on the merits of his complaint.

During questioning, Mary Olatayo admitted to the police that she had sold the infant for N600,000 to a person in Anambra State. She acknowledged that her friend Chioma Ogbonna had introduced her to the Anambra State customer, and they had split the proceeds 50-50.

Oyeyemi claimed that Lanre Bankole, the state's commissioner of police, had ordered the transfer of the suspects to the state's Anti-Human Trafficking and Child Labor Unit for further investigation.

He claimed that the CP also ordered that every effort be made to find the infant. Her accomplice, Chioma Ogbonna has also been arrested.
