On Wednesday, a Lagos State High Court in Ikeja condemned Michael Ahmed, a 33-year-old biker, to life in jail for rapping his 21-year-old passenger on an estate.
On her way home from church, the defendant raped the victim.
According to the Nigerian News Agency, Mr Ramon Bashir, the defendant's lawyer, urged with the court to temper justice with mercy, stressing that the defendant had no past criminal record.
Justice Hakeem Oshodi, who delivered the verdict, stated that the prosecution had proven Ahmed's guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.
"There is clear evidence before the court that the defendant forced himself on the victim.
“There is also proof before the court that the defendant bit the survivor on the shoulder.
“The defendant is hereby convicted of the two counts of rape and serious assault.
“The court has clearly considered the allocutus presented by the defence counsel,” the judge held.
Justice Oshodi stated that the court had no authority to sentence rape defendants to a reduced sentence. The defendant is hereby condemned to life in prison, which is the maximum penalty for rape, and three years in prison for serious assault, he said.©Standard Gazette, 2021.
